TERME DI SAN FILIPPO

INFORMATION:
The springs at San Filippo are gorgeous! The calciferous formations, waterfalls and small pools of hot water surrounded by the woods just outside the small town of Bagni San Filippo in the Val d’Orcia will seem to take you to another world. The waterfall is called the White Whale for its similarity to the mouth of a whale. The calcium formation is the most impressive formation at the hot springs of San Filippo, and you must not walk on it as the formations are delicate! The springs surge out of the ground nearby, coming out at 48°C, actually very warm which permits bathing in fall and winter.

PARCO DELL’UCCELLINA

INFORMATION:
The Uccellina Park encompasses many different areas: a mountain ridge, the Uccellina Mountains, a marshy area and a coastal stretch of over 25 km.
Beaches, marshes, pine forests: a contrast of colours. The protected areas are open-air laboratories, designed, therefore, not only to be places of conservation but also areas in which to develop knowledge and local skills, associated with the culture of sustainability.
Parks play a strategic role in planning and managing sustainable development through innovative forms of management at local level in terms of environment and tourism.

CALETTA DI CALAFURIA

INFORMATION:
The Calafuria (“Bay of Fury”) cliff, a few kilometres of rugged coastline, beaten – as its name suggests – by the wind and by the fury of the sea, is one of the geologically most interesting stretches of the Livorno coast: it is an extremely ephemeral location as the wind is always at work and the cliff is constantly wearing away under its pressure. There are few beaches but the cliff is often accessible and there are even some “pools” of salty water, the result of past excavations which, with the waves, fill will sea water.
This landscape almost seems to be drawn, such that it is worthy of its popular name of “Sassoscritto” (precisely meaning “drawn cliff”).

VOLTERRA

INFORMATION:
The city of Volterra, famous for mining and processing of alabaster, was one of the main city-states of ancient Tuscany (Etruria); in the Middle Ages, it was the seat of an important Episcopal lordship. Today, it conserves an important historical centre of Etruscan origin (there are many remains from that period: Porta all’Arco, magnificently preserved; Porta Diana, preserving the blocks of the jambs; a large part of the city walls, built with cyclopean blocks of local stone; Roman ruins, including the hemicycle Theatre; and mediaeval buildings such as the Cathedral, the Medici Fortress and the Palazzo dei Priori on the homonymous square, the nerve centre of the town).

INFORMATION:
Vittorio Giorgini was an interesting and extraordinary character, forgotten by official culture. His work was definitely worthy of renewed interpretation and reflection.
Casa Esagono is an architectural work made from wood in hexagonal modules, suspended between the trees, built in Baratti in 1957 by Vittorio Giorgini (1926-2010). The summer residence of the Florentine architect until 1969, the home became a meeting place for artist friends and intellectuals. In addition, Casa Saldarini, better known as Casa Balena, is open every day to the public with guided tours, events and screenings.

THE POPULONIA NECROPOLIS

INFORMATION:
The Populonia necropolis is one of the most important monuments of the Etruscan civilisation. It is located in the Gulf of Baratti and consists of various sites, dating back to different periods of Etruscan history. The findings of the necropolis are displayed in the Gasparri private collection museum, in Populonia Alta.
The tombs of the orientalising and archaic necropolis were found, up until the early twentieth-century, buried under several metres of iron slag, debris still left in the Etruscan period by the processing of this important metal, a great source of income for Populonia. Apart from some random discoveries in the nineteenth-century, the first tomb was identified in 1897 by the archaeologist Isidoro Falchi.
