SIENA PIAZZA DEL CAMPO

INFORMATION:

Piazza del Campo
It is the heart of Siena, the fulcrum of its historic center, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most beautiful squares in the world. Piazza del Campo, the “shell” divided into nine sections as a testament to the Nove Signori (Nine Lords) that governed the city at the end of the 13th century, impresses visitors with its elegance and truly unique shape.
The square got its name from its former life as a green space that hosted the town’s market, and today acts as its prime activity hub and open-air arena where twice a year the famous Palio takes place.

VAL D’ORCIA/PIENZA

INFORMATION:
Pienza, located on the crest of a hill overlooking the Val d’Orcia, near Siena, was established in the medieval period as Corsignano. Renaissance town-planning concepts were first put into practice when Pope Pius II enlisted the architect Bernardo Rossellino. Rossellino applied the principles of his mentor, Leon Battista Alberti, a humanist thinker and architect, author of the first architectural treatise of the Renaissance. As the first application of the Renaissance Humanist concept of urban design, the town occupies a seminal position in the development of the concept of the planned “ideal town” and plays a significant role in subsequent urban development in Italy and beyond.

SACRED GARDEN OF BOMARZO

INFORMATION:
Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo, or Park of Monsters. lt was designed by Prince Vicino Orsini and the great architect Pirro Ligorio in 1552.
The park is unique, even if it belongs to the erudite architectural-naturalistic culture of the second half of the sixteenth century. The learned Prince of Bomarzo dedicated himself to creating an eccentric “wood” sculpted into enigmatic figures of monsters, dragons, mythological subjects and exotic animals, a crooked house, fountains, seats and obelisks with carved mottoes and inscriptions.
Everything is invented with iconological criteria, a labyrinth of symbols which envelopes anyone who enters.
